Akira Toriyama, the creator of the popular anime and manga series Dragon Ball has been one of the major pillars that have helped establish the anime community on a global scale. His work has inspired many fans and manga creators and is still continuing to do so. Thus, his death has come as a shock to the entire industry.
During his life, he made many friends from the industry. One of them was the creator of another legendary anime and manga series, One Piece. Although Eiichiro Oda has confessed to the fact that he was inspired by Toriyama, the two shared a great bond and had respect for the works of each other.
In an interview, Oda and Toriyama discussed how they work and the process of creating such brilliant anime and manga series. Toriyama also confessed his only regret about his magnum opus and how he was not able to change it ever. But it never affected the reputation Dragon Ball built as a series.
Akira Toriyama Shares His Only Regret About Dragon Ball with Eiichiro Oda
In a discussion between Toriyama and Eiichiro Oda, which was recorded within the One Piece artbook, Color Walk 1 and later shared by Thegrandline, Toriyama and Oda praised each other’s works and Oda even shared his favorite aspects and characters from the iconic Dragon Ball series. During the discussion, Toriyama expressed his only regret with Dragon Ball.
He stated:
“But, Dragon Ball grew to have more and more muscular characters. I actually regret not having studied muscle models back then, but I still haven’t gotten around to it. I thought too much about how the muscles looked [stylistically], so if you look at them as real muscles, it isn’t accurate.”
According to Akira Toriyama, he created a lot more muscular characters than the series should have. He stated that he regrets not studying muscle models and to this day he doesn’t understand them properly. He even confessed that he drew the muscles of the characters in such a way that if looked closely, fans can point out that they are not accurate.
Muscular Characters in Dragon Ball Are Not Too Accurate
Many of the characters in Dragon Ball are portrayed as muscular in order to highlight their strength and power. Because the show frequently centers on brutal martial arts fights and extraordinary accomplishments, the characters’ well-defined bodies are utilized to graphically represent their physical prowess.
Many of the characters in Dragon Ball are in very good shape, but some of them have more muscle than what can be described as bulky or buff. Because there are so many muscular characters it should have been easy for Toriyama to understand muscle models which could have helped him add another precision to the series.
However, it did not affect the name of the Dragon Ball anime and manga series in any way, and it was not even questioned by fans of Toriyama. Dragon Ball has laid the pathway for the anime industry for so many years, and it is bound to do it for many more generations to come.
