After an almost three-year break from the limelight, Life is Strange is finally back to share yet another supernaturally and emotionally charged narrative. However, things are a little different now—announced at the recent Xbox games showcase, Double Exposure also brings back the much-beloved protagonist Max Caulfield, now with the power to travel between parallel worlds.

Interestingly, many may already be familiar with the mechanic, given how it was first introduced most unexpectedly through Lords of the Fallen. What remains to be seen, then, is how well Double Exposure’s latest mechanic can stack up against what we’ve already seen.

Life Is Strange’s Parallel World Bears a Striking Resemblance to Lords of the Fallen’s Umbral Mechanic

As the Xbox Games Showcase trailer shows, the series’ latest flagship power is Max’s ability to traverse a parallel world to save Safi, her friend. Keen-eyed viewers immediately noticed that the ability echoes the ability to traverse the Umbral plain seen in 2023’s Lords of the Fallen.

There may be a few differences between the two, though. The trailer already hints at Max’s ability to have a more substantial narrative focus than whatever Umbral offered, allowing players to explore diverse outcomes based on their choices.

The Umbral Plain was also neatly harmonized into Lords of the Fallen‘s world design, allowing players to switch between the Axiom and Umbral at a moment’s notice. That said, there may be a possibility that the gameplay structure of Double Exposure will only allow the switch at specific story beats.

Since the end of Life is Strange‘s early entries, fans have been desperate and eager to know what’s next in Max’s story. Despite the story coming full circle by its end, many have remained keen to see her return to the series. It’s one of the reasons why the game’s announcement became a real highlight, despite all the other great games Xbox revealed in its showcase.

Well, they sure got what they wanted, as Max is now back, a little older and wiser than before, thrust straight into a supernatural murder mystery. However, many have observed that the return has only served to bring up many new questions surrounding the character.

Those who played the first Life is Strange understand that Max’s return is complicated, as it is now up to Deck Nine to decide the canon ending for the first game. The problem is that no matter which ending they choose, fans will undoubtedly be less than pleased.

It’s a delicate balancing act that Deck Nine will have to go through, and if the announcement trailer suggests anything, the developer should prepare for a storm of backlash from fans.
