In a scene from Season 1, episode The Middle Earth Paradigm, Cuoco’s Penny brings her ex-boyfriend Kurt (Brian Patrick Wade) to a Halloween party along with Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, and Howard. The ex picks up Leonard, and it was supposed to be funny, right? But for Galecki, it hit a little too close to home. In The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story, the actor expressed his grief about the scene (via Looper):
Him picking me up as Leonard really affected me to the point where I think I cried after we shot the episode… It really dug up some old schoolyard stuff for me.
It’s pretty wild how acting can mess with your head. But this emotional rollercoaster helped Galecki connect with his character on a whole new level. The 49-year-old explained how the ordeal helped him understand Leonard better:
I had a way into Leonard and really began to understand him.
