Despite Harrison Ford’s remarkable career, encompassing iconic roles in the Indiana Jones franchise, Blade Runner, and more, he still carries a twinge of regret for passing up George Clooney’s role in Syriana. This will undoubtedly stand as one of the biggest what-if moments, leaving the fans to wonder how Ford might have added his own touch of brilliance to that complex character. Even the legendary can’t escape the occasional “what could have been” in the world of Hollywood.
Harrison Ford Expresses Regret for Declining George Clooney’s Role in Syriana
Harrison Ford once revealed to the Irish Examiner, that he was presented with the opportunity to take on George Clooney’s role in Syriana, a role that eventually earned the actor an Oscar. Ford turned down the offer because he thought that the film lacked sufficient substance. He said,
“I saw a bit of (director) Steve Gaghan’s movie Syriana and I wish I’d played the part that was offered to me – George’s part.–I didn’t feel strongly enough about the truth of the material and I think I made a mistake. I think the film underwent some changes and I think a lot of it is very truthful. The things that I thought weren’t, were obviated after I left the table.”
Sometimes, the actor does feel a bit down and regretful about not thoroughly inspecting the role before letting it slip away. Despite his regrets, it doesn’t diminish his admiration for George Clooney’s portrayal. While Ford received an Academy Award nomination in 1986, fans can’t help but wonder if saying “yes” to this particular role might have brought home the coveted award for him.
Other Major Roles Harrison Ford Has Rejected
Harrison Ford has embraced some truly iconic roles in his lifetime, notably being Spielberg’s top choice for Dr. Grant in Jurassic Park. Another significant mention is Schindler’s List, where Ford had a chance again in a Spielberg movie. Additionally, he was considered for The Patriot.
In the case of The Shining, both Harrison Ford and Robin Williams were considered for the role of Jack Torrance. The decision-making process remains shrouded in uncertainty, leaving it unclear who eventually turned down or accepted the role. Ultimately, the part went to Jack Nicholson. Fortunately, when The Shining graced the theaters, Harrison Ford had already become a prominent star, courtesy of his memorable roles in Star Wars and other hit films.
While there have been a few misses along the way, there’s no denying that the actor has far more hits in his career.
