“I think I would be perfect”: Before Patty Jenkins, ‘Drive’ Director Wanted to Make Wonder Woman Movie With Christina Hendricks Playing Lead

With DC on the verge of getting reset, which will finally erase the struggling DCEU and create a fresh slate for the upcoming projects, it will be engrossing to witness the new DCU bloom under James Gunn and Peter Safran. But despite its flaws, the DCEU did give fans several reasons to smile and Wonder Woman was one of the best things to come out of this universe, which remains one of the best DCEU entries to date.

However, before Patty Jenkins was allowed to lead the project with Gal Gadot at its forefront, there were rumors surrounding several other directors and actresses to lead the project. Among them, Christina Hendricks was rumored as one of the favorites for the role and the Drive director once showcased his interest in leading this project.

Nicolas Winding Refn once expressed his desire to craft a Wonder Woman film

Following the release of Drive, starring Ryan Gosling, director Nicolas Winding Refn soon rose to stardom and garnered immense appreciation for the critically acclaimed film. But considering that in the early 2010s Marvel was starting to blow and DC would soon kickstart their own Cinematic Universe, Refn showcased his interest to lead a prominent DC hero to the big screens. He said,

“I would love to make Wonder Woman, I think I would be perfect to make Wonder Woman”.

On asked who will be the actress to lead his vision for the character, the director stated, “If I ever get to do it, she’s going to be it.” referring to Christina Hendricks, But he isn’t the only one who showcased an interest in diving into the Wonder Woman project, as Christina Hendricks too once shared her desire to play the role of the Amazonian princess.

Christina Hendricks would have loved to play the role of Wonder Woman

Although the future of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the DCU remains uncertain, it is hard to imagine anyone else as Princess Diana, as Gadot nailed the character in all of her appearances. However, before she was brought into the mix, Christina Hendricks was rumored as the top choice for the role, and the actress too showcased an interest in starring in this project. She stated,

“I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life … I had Underoos — I had Wonder Woman Underoos. I heard that rumor… I love it! I’d love to [do it]. That would be such fun! Let’s put it out there!”

Even though witnessing Refn’s interpretation of the character would’ve been fun, considering that the Jenkins-led film was one of the few great things to come out of the DCEU, things worked out for the best.
