FRIENDS is undoubtedly an iconic sitcom, with characters that are still loved by millions. While Rachel’s iconic hairstyle created a storm in the 90s, it was no match for Chandler Bing’s sarcastic lines and humor that tickled the funny bones of the audience. It seemed as if no other character on the show could match up to the legendary quips that Matthew Perry’s Chandler had.
But people on Reddit have a different opinion on this subject and have placed Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay, who’s giving a tough competition to Chandler in the battle of who’s the funniest on the show.
The One FRIENDS Character Whose Lines Stand Up to Chandler Bing’s Iconic Quips
The NBC hit FRIENDS ended in 2004, and even after 20 years of its conclusion, it still holds a great fan following. It presented six characters to the world, each with their own quirks and talents. Among them, Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing can easily be considered the most iconic.
However, some fans on Reddit have pointed out that other than Perry’s character, only Lisa Kudrow‘s Phoebe Buffay had lines that were as legendary as Chandler’s.
A user on Reddit posted a question asking other users to rank the most iconic FRIENDS quotes. After coming across the post, many users rushed to the comments section to detail their favorite dialogue from the hit sitcom.
While the comments featured some of the most iconic quips, they also brought forth several lines that Phoebe had used in the sitcom that were just as iconic as Chandler Bing’s.
The duo indeed has several iconic quips and jokes on the show individually. But even together, they gave the audience some of the most memorable episodes on the hit sitcom. For instance, when Phoebe finds out about Chandler and Monica’s secret relationship, her reaction to the entire sequence turns an already hilarious situation into pure comedic gold.
Kudrow’s character truly shined in the episode titled The One Where Everybody Finds Out. After discovering their relationship, both Rachel and Phoebe (also Joey, though he just wanted the secret to be out in the open ASAP) planned to mess with the couple to freak them out.
While budging Mondler wasn’t an easy task, Phoebe succeeded in her attempt, with the duo admitting that they do in fact love each other. Towards the end, even Ross finds out about their relationship and has a completely different reaction than many had hoped for, including Chandler.
Lisa Kudrow Revisits FRIENDS in Memory of Matthew Perry
Lisa Kudrow has proved yet again just how amazing her camaraderie was with the late Matthew Perry. The actress has been quite vocal about not watching the hit sitcom, as it would be weird to watch herself on the screen. But in a heartwarming turn of events, she detailed to The Hollywood Reporter that she’d watch the show again for Perry. She added:
Honestly, I wasn’t able to watch it because it’s too embarrassing to watch yourself. (Further) But if I make it about Matthew, then that’s OK. And it’s just celebrating how hilarious he was — and that is what I want to remember (about him).
In a past interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2009, the actress detailed that she doesn’t even remember the last time she watched an episode of the show. This was in complete contrast to her co-stars Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, and David Schwimmer, who have watched the entire sitcom. Tragically, Matthew Perry passed away in October 2023 due to a possible ketamine overdose.
Afterward, the entire cast of FRIENDS released a joint statement expressing their heartbreak over Perry’s passing. At the moment, about five people have been charged in his death probe, one of which is his live-in assistant.
