Call of Duty has been battling it out between Xbox and PlayStation consoles for over 17 years. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard at the end of 2023, Xbox seem to have won the battle afterall. However, Microsoft promises to keep its big franchises available on all platforms for all players.

That doesn’t mean the trillion dollar company can’t play favorites. PlayStation announced three multiplayer games that will be free for PS Plus subscribers this upcoming weekend. The list includes NBA 2K24, Helldivers 2, and Modern Warfare 2. You read that right, not the current entry but the one from two years ago.

The Sony owned gaming giants host multiplayer free weekends every once in a while for the subscribers. It usually consists of GTA, NBA 2K, and Call of Duty. Because of the success of Helldivers 2, it’s now featured for this weekend alongside NBA 2K24.

Topping the list off with the well known first-person shooter series makes sense. Despite it being critically panned and sales numbers down, Modern Warfare 3 was still able to generate enough players to keep consistent updates going.

With Black Ops 6 on the horizon, you would think putting the current game on the free multiplayer weekend would be great to give players one last hurrah for the game.

Instead, the free weekend features the outdated game that was released almost two years ago. NBA 2K features the newest entry, so why did the famous first-person shooter franchise get shafted?

The internal dealings of why MW2 is featured on the free multiplayer weekend is unknown publicly. One may assume Microsoft and Activision may not want to play nice with the competition but that doesn’t really make sense.

Sales for the game are less than the previous entry and a free multiplayer weekend would help bump the player base up. In addition, Modern Warfare 3 is already on the way out with many fans enthusiastic about the upcoming title Black Ops 6

Treyarch’s return to the franchise will be available on Xbox Game Pass Day 1 while PS users have to purchase the game outright. Xbox are already leveraging the Activision Blizzard deal to its benefit.

Something must have gone down behind the scenes to not allow Modern Warfare 3 available for this upcoming multiplayer weekend. If you’re still looking to try out Modern Warfare 3 on your PS4/PS5, you have to pay for it.
