Gal Gadot was singled out as one of the best performances in Batman v. Superman, where she appeared as Wonder Woman for the first time. Gadot was earlier set to play Faora-Ul in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel before dropping out due to her pregnancy. The Red Notice actress, in addition to her Krav Maga and Karate skills, further received swordsmanship, Kung fu, kickboxing, and jiu-jitsu training.

Gal Gadot starred in her first standalone film in DCEU, Wonder Woman, in 2017. The film received widespread acclaim and raked in $817 million at the box office, becoming the third highest-grossing film in the DCEU. However, following the scrapping of DCEU, there were speculations about Gal Gadot being replaced as Wonder Woman.

In November 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC studios, and in January 2023, they officially canceled plans for a potential Wonder Woman threequel. This sent fans into a frenzy about Gal Gadot’s fate in the new DCU. At the same time, speculations also arose about other actresses being considered for the role.

In light of her recent action-packed roles, Ana de Armas was also a popular contender in these discussions. de Armas has previously played roles in the Bond film, No Time to Die, and the spy thriller, Ghosted. She’s also set to play the titular assassin role in the upcoming movie, Ballerina, a spin-off of Keanu Reeves’s John Wick Universe.

Ana de Armas appeared on Wired’s Autocomplete Interview alongside Chris Evans for the promotion of their film, Ghosted. The Blonde actress was asked the question, “Is Ana de Armas the next Wonder Woman?”. Without hesitation, the Knives Out actress answered the Wired question:

“Well, I feel like Gal Gadot is doing a great job. I think she should keep doing that.”

Whether de Armas would be suited for the Wonder Woman role is a question for another time, but the War Dogs actress was not wrong about Gal Gadot. The studio under James Gunn also appeared to have realized this, as they have retained the Heart of Stone actress as DCU’s Wonder Woman.

Following the announcement of DCU, the studio faced criticism for several of its creative decisions. One of the controversial decisions was letting go of actors Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, who were headlining the DCEU as Superman and Batman, respectively. However, the studio surprisingly retained Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot confirmed this news in an interview with Flaunt:

“I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”

This decision fulfilled the wishes of fans as well as that of Ana de Armas. However, nothing is yet confirmed about the rebooted Wonder Woman and its characters. No new Wonder Woman film has been announced for Gods and Monsters, the first chapter of DCU. Meanwhile, Gadot is busy focusing on her next role as the Evil Queen in Snow White.
