Popular for making mind-bending Sci-Fi thrillers with an equally exciting amount of narrative flair to them, the director has made a name for himself through these signature traits. Along with his talents, he relies on the talent of the actors he works with on his projects, and something that becomes crucial for him in this process is figuring out the potential of a star. Thus, it came as a positive reinforcement when the director wanted to see Ben Affleck as Batman in the DCEU.

While he might’ve made some of the best Sci-Fi films in the industry, Christopher Nolan is most famously known to bring the darker and more grounded side of Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy. Working with Christian Bale to bring this side of the masked vigilante onto the big screen was a task that the Inception creator achieved beyond expectation. And thus, when it was time to pass on that legacy, he was confident to leave it in the hands of a capable successor.

During an interview with The Daily Beast, Nolan was talking about his then-upcoming film Interstellar, where he talked about his experience working on a modern-day space odyssey with Physicist Kip Thorne. Here, they also talked about how being an advisory member of Batman Vs. Superman was like. Nolan shared his views about Ben Affleck, saying that he was excited to see him don the cowl of Batman to bring him to life in the DCEU. He said:

“I’m only involved in that project in an advisory capacity as an executive producer, so I’m not involved in the day-to-day. When they told me that Ben was interested in doing it, I thought, “How thrilling!” This is the guy who just won Best Picture as a director and as an actor, and I thought it would be a great thing that he’d be willing to do this. I think the guy is incredibly talented and I’m very excited to see what Zack and Ben do together.”

And Nolan was right on the mark as Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice became one of the biggest hits for the DCEU earning a whopping $837 Million at the box office.

While people had seen different iterations of Batman in the past, almost all of them had portrayed the superhero on the surface level without much character substance. But with the advent of The Dark Knight trilogy, audiences were blown away by just how much depth and character development they witnessed of Bruce Wayne, both as himself and the Dark Knight. The trilogy went on to pin the character against invincible foes and kept developing the hero in a grounded way, which connected with the fans.
