Yes, the 35-year-old actor was just one elaborate joke away from becoming Mr. Aubrey Plaza not too long ago. They first met in 2010 while filming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and by the time they took a road trip together, they were dating.

The relationship between the Canadian actor and the Marvel actress has long been the subject of debate in the entertainment world. Everyone was somewhat perplexed when The White Lotus actress revealed that she had married the Barbie actor in order to refer to him as her ex-husband.

Well, this announcement shocked the entire industry, even though it seemed like a joke.

And now, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the actor, best known for his work in Superbad, related a strange anecdote about almost getting married while traveling through Las Vegas.

When Michael Cera Almost Married Aubrey Plaza

They still remained close friends, even though their relationship only lasted for over a year, Michael Cera revealed during his candid chat with Rolling Stone. He also highlighted the close bond he has shared with Aubrey Plaza by describing her as a special person and one of the funniest people he knows.

The Year One actor claimed that he and his then-girlfriend “almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married” while traveling through Las Vegas. However, the plan was to divorce her shortly after, so that when they were young, around 20, they could jokingly refer to each other as “my ex-husband” and “my ex-wife”.

“We were driving through Vegas and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married.”

“I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like… 20.”

Thankfully, none of that happened, and the Canadian actor later married a woman named Nadine Cera in 2017. In addition, he also released a song for her, titled, ohNadine (you were in my dream).

Thus, despite their failed (or fake) marriage, the actor has no hard feelings about it at the moment. On the other hand, in a 2016 interview, The To Do List actress also declared that she and Cera were still “really good friends” and that they “love each other“.

Currently, both are happy in their married life with their respective partners. While the Juno
actor married Nadine Cera in 2017, Plaza eventually married writer and director, Jeff Baena in 2021.

So, despite being a singular and peculiar event in Hollywood history, Aubrey Plaza and Michael Cera’s fake marriage was a fun joke that made everyone laugh.

They would still collaborate on various projects together, and thus, their friendship and professionalism may not change. Who knows, maybe they will appear together on screen in a later project, but for now, their friendship is more than sufficient.
