Hollywood often harbors the tendency to take biographical films—particularly those that portray real-life tragedies—and treat them in a way that ultimately comes across as exploitative. Wrestling icons and their life stories are no exception to such exploitation, not just from the lens of a profit-making world but also in general.

Sean Durkin knew going into the project that he would need to approach the concept with humanity and compassion. We can confirm that the helmer accomplished his mission with the help of Zac Efron’s brilliant embodiment and poignant on-screen disposition.

The endeavor has made headlines for its fact-based, appropriately engaging, and moving narrative. It also garnered the audience’s favor due to Zac Efron‘s utmost commitment and dedication as the lead actor.

In an interview with Slash Film, director Sean Durkin was asked to discuss his thoughtful treatment of the movie’s material. The 42-year-old disclosed that he addressed the real-life events surrounding the wrestling family with the utmost respect, caution, and from an empathic human standpoint to veer away from a premise that feels exploitative and profiting off one’s struggles or grief.

Following was his statement:

“Just trying to think about the people. Just always trying to think about the human side of it and … the human experience of those losses and just wanting to try and feel what it felt like for them.”

He continued:

“And you’re never going to be able to do that fully because you can’t tell a life fully in a movie. You can’t tell a family life fully in a movie. But if you can create a piece of that emotion or just a piece of that experience or a moment from that experience that resonates.”

Utilizing such an approach enabled Durkin to respect the individuals involved, their experiences, feelings, and long-standing legacy. “It’s just bringing it back to instinct and heart,” he added, underscoring the significance of honestly focusing on the characters’ journey.

Durkin succeeded admirably in bringing the family’s tragedy and triumphs to the big screen with Zac Efron’s moving, credible portrayal of Kevin Von Erich. Had it not been for the efforts of the lead actor and the entire cast, the story wouldn’t have been done justice. Thankfully, we don’t have to live with such possibilities.
