When asked if she wanted to have her solo film, a spin-off to the Mission Impossible franchise focusing on Ilsa Faust, the actress believed it unnecessary and will only take away the essence of the team in the original films.

Rebecca Ferguson Is Not Interested In Mission Impossible Spin-Off

In an exclusive interview with ComicBook, Dune star Rebecca Ferguson shared her honest opinion on the potential spin-off featuring her character:

When I started Mission, I fell in love with Ilsa so much. I thought, ‘Yeah, f**k yeah she’d have a spinoff. And then gradually, I don’t know if I became humble or if I realized it has nothing to do with Ilsa, it actually is a team thing, it is Ilsa and Ethan and Benji and – I was gonna say Ving – all of the characters together that makes it so good.”

With this realization, Ferguson thought a spin-off would only deviate fans’ attention to a single character instead of focusing on the group’s teamwork. Nevertheless, she noted that if the studio would develop a Mission Impossible spin-off, it would still work:

The idea of Ilsa alone – it would always work, you would need [director] Chris McQuarrie, and you would need Tom to produce it. Maybe Tom’s Ethan can dip in and out, he can be a guest star in my show. My point is, it’s not needed, I think. I think we’re good as it stands.”

Each character has its own unique story and contribution to the plot, and while Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is the main star of the film, he always worked with and sought help from his colleagues. The narrative’s focus on their evolving friendship and camaraderie made the movies more compelling to watch.

Rebecca Ferguson Reflects On Her Mission Impossible Character

The Swedish star teases fans on the upcoming movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and claims it is “an explosive, dynamic film with incredible stunts you’ve never seen before.” She revealed that her work on Mission Impossible pushed her out of comfort zone (via Town and Country Magazine):

We don’t really work with scripts. As someone who likes structure, I find it tricky, but it makes me confront the fact that I have zero control. There is method to the madness.”

Ferguson also noted that, as an actress who plays a badass heroine, she remains cognizant of how this type of character could put her in a box and get typecast as a “strong female character”:

I feel frustrated by the pitfall of doing things that are not completely different, from a creative aspect. People enjoy what I do, but it’s recognized in a similar way. It makes me see that I’m trying to put together something that is shaped by other people, and I want to break out of it.”

The idea of an Ilsa Faust-centered spin-off mainly lies in the producers’ hands, although Ferguson seemed resolute about her opinion that the agent works better in a team.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 12, 2023.
