Sandra Bullock explained that her daughter’s response made her extremely happy because she was already “voicing,” and her children are more woke than her.

“The fact that that was fire in her belly made me so happy that she was already voicing. I let [my kids] teach me and tell me what they need to know. I thought I was educated and woke, I thought I had it all, and guess what, I wasn’t.”

The actress was proud of her children, as they were aware of what is going on in the real world, and she shared an instance of her son which concerned her as a mother as he was only six years old during that time.

“As a white parent who loves her children more than life itself, I’m scared of everything, laying all kinds of existential anxiety on them.”

However, she would not try to isolate her son or daughter from the realities of being a Black person in the modern world, and she is “letting [them] see everything on television and letting [them] process it.” Which according to her is the best way to care for them, but she expressed her concerns when her children leave the home.

“I have to think about what they’re going to experience leaving the home. They’re going to have my fear, but how can I make sure my anxiety is accurate [and] protective?”

The actress shared an instance of her son, Louis Bardo Bullock who was wearing a hoodie when he was six years old. “He popped that hoodie on his head and I went, ‘Ahhhhh,’” Sandra said with a shudder, referencing Trayvon Martin. The young boy who was only 17 years old was of Black ethnicity, he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman because he thought the teen “looked suspicious” for wearing a hoodie.

Sandra Bullock’s concern for her children is justified because of the history of racial abuse Black people have endured, and the constant stereotypes. However, the world is becoming a better place where efforts are being made for cultural diversity and cultural sensitivity.
