Ethan Hawke revealed the most embarrassing review of his acting career

The Magnificent Seven star Ethan Hawke opened up on his most embarrassing incident in life while he was being interviewed along with his daughter Maya Hawke. The actor recalled the particularly painful moment of his early acting days. He shared that his film Dead Poets Society was released at the time in which he played the role of Todd Anderson. Around the time, he was offered a role for his Broadway debut. He was given a chance to play the lead Constantine in a stage production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.

The actor recalled in conversation with Variety that he received his worst review when he did his first Broadway show. He recalled his reaction,

“I thought I was going to get nuts.”

Stranger Things actress and his daughter, Maya Hawke was left in splits on hearing the embarrassing incident.

Ethan Hawke was hoping for a Marlon Brando moment

In an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show, Ethan Hawke shared,

“Dead Poets Society comes out, people think you might have a chance of making it. You audition for and get your chance, in your Broadway debut, in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. You’re playing the ultimate young man’s part as Constantine, you’re making your Broadway debut.”

Hawke continued,

“You fantasize in your head. You can’t help it. You know you’re not supposed to be results-oriented, you want to share and express yourself, but you do think, maybe people will think I’m great, you know? … You might read what Marlon Brando’s debut was like, and you read the great notices, and you think, ‘I wonder if mine will be like that.’”

Before Sunrise star shared,

“You’re rehearsing and feeling so confident. You know, it’s really going well … and your mom, who is very supportive, comes, and she’s like, ‘Wow, Ethan! You’re really doing it.’ And then The New York Times comes.”

He recalled the bad write-up for his play by The New York Times,

“‘Ethan Hawke plays Constantine more concerned with his pimples than his poetry. Perhaps he should spend less time at the Actors Studio and more at the dermatologist.’”

Ethan Hawke will soon star alongside Julia Robert in Leave the World Behind.
