Kirsten Dunst embarked on her acting journey at a young age and initially gained recognition with movies like Jumanji and Interview with the Vampire. After sharing the screen with Hollywood stars like Robin Williams and Brad Pitt, she was cast alongside George Clooney in Season 3 of the medical drama ER.
The series featured Dunst, who was 14 at the time, in the controversial role of a child prostitute. However, Dunst has shared in a recent interview that she was oblivious to the controversial aspects of her character and believed that she was embodying the persona of a street kid.
Kirsten Dunst Believed She Was Playing a Street Kid in ER
During her recent interview with Variety, Kirsten Dunst reflected on working as a child actress in Hollywood. The actress shared that her mother and a trusted acting teacher played crucial roles in ensuring she was protected while working on her early projects, which often involved mature themes.
The Oscar-nominated actress also reflected on her role in the medical drama ER, saying that she was not aware that she was playing the role of a prostitute in the series. “I thought I was like a street kid,” she told Variety before adding, “I didn’t know I was a prostitute. Really?”
While she did not further discuss the role, the vague discussion about the character’s background and focus on homelessness and street life may have contributed to Dunst remaining unaware of the more delicate aspects of her character’s storyline.
Kirsten Dunst Recalled an Unsettling Encounter With a Director
During her interview with Variety, Kirsten Dunst also shared an encounter from when she was 16 years old. She recalled meeting a director who wanted to do a movie with her. However, during the discussion, the director posed an inappropriate question, leaving her unsettled and unsure how to respond.
“I did one meeting once with a director, and he asked me an inappropriate question. And that was the only time. I was like, ‘That’s not cool.’ But I didn’t say that [to him]. I was freaked out. I didn’t know if I should answer or not.”
The actress also discussed the incident in an interview with The Telegraph. However, she did not name the “director,” saying that “it’s not something I like to reflect on.” Dunst, who spent a significant time on film sets growing up, also reflected on the recently released ID documentary Quiet on Set.
“It sounds real bad,” she said, expressing her concern about the darker aspects of the entertainment industry. Dunst also shared that she was able to avoid the predatory nature of show business due to the constant presence of her mother by her side.
