Jason Momoa was rumored to be playing the role of the DC superhero Arthur Curry/Aquaman in June 2014. He did not make his first appearance as the character until 2016 when he made a cameo in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And he might have returned as the character for the last time in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and the movie’s box office collection is not half as bad as some people might have assumed.

Jason Momoa‘s first solo DC movie did not come until 2018 when he starred in Aquaman, in which he starred as the titular superhero. The movie, directed by James Wan, followed Arthur Curry on his quest to lead the underwater kingdom and prevent his brother from uniting the seven underwater kingdoms to destroy the surface kingdom. The film did phenomenally well at the box office with a global collection of $1.1 billion.

5 years later, the second part of Aquaman was released on December 22, 2023. Before its release, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom gained a lot of negative attention with Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s defamation case and the poor performance of the DC movies. So most fans were guessing that the film would not do too well at the box office.

According to The Hollywood Handle on X, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s global box office collection of $433.7 million has made it the highest-grossing DC movie since 2018. While this is much less than the collection of the first movie, the film has performed better than some of the other DC movies released in the same year.

DC movies like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle, which were also released in 2023, earned $134 million and $130.8 million, respectively, so Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s performance was marginally better.

Starring Jason Momoa in the lead role, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sees Arthur Curry joining hands with his half-brother Orm to stop Black Manta from killing his family and overheating the world while searching for the lost seventh kingdom.

Fans were convinced that the movie was not going to do well at the box office, so the movie earning more than $400 million has come as a shock to many. One of the X users commented: “I thought it flopped.”

While there is a high chance that Momoa will not return as the character in the DC any time soon since the franchise is getting a reboot, it is good to know that the movie performed better than people had been expecting it to.
