James Gunn has made one of the best superhero movie trilogies with the Guardians of the Galaxy films. The director made audiences emotionally connect with a rag-tag team of misfits and made them charming and relatable. The filmmaker brought a satisfying conclusion to the arc of the team with 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Meanwhile, Eli Roth’s live-action adaptation of the beloved video game Borderlands has just released its teaser and poster. While it looks fun, audiences have negatively compared it to the style and vibe of Gunn’s Guardians films and called it derivative.
Fans Call Out Borderlands for Its Striking Similarity to Guardians of the Galaxy
After the success of his 2023 slasher film Thanksgiving, director Eli Roth is gearing up for his next release, Borderlands, a live-action adaptation of the beloved video game series. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis. The teaser and first look of the film were released recently.
While the film looks vibrant and fun, fans can’t seem to ignore its similarities with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films which involved the camaraderie of a rag-tag team of misfits, which is also the case with this film.
The color palette and poster also drew comparisons to those films and some fans on X criticized the film for these aspects. Here are some of the reactions.

The film might look like a Gunn-directed film but Roth is surely bringing his own signature flair and stylish visuals to the film. The trailer which is coming today will further show its narrative and the fun chemistry between the cast. It remains to be seen whether the film does justice to the games when it is released in theatres on August 9, 2024.
Isabela Merced is Honored That James Gunn Trusts Her to Play Hawkgirl
Isabela Merced is set to play Hawkgirl in James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy. She is among an ensemble cast led by David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. At the premiere of her new film Madame Web, Merced expressed her excitement about getting to work with Gunn on the film.
Merced claimed that Gunn has the best people working for him on Superman: Legacy and she trusts them to do a great job on the film. She is also incredibly happy that Gunn trusted her to play Hawkgirl in the film. She told Deadline,
“James Gunn is one of those guys that like has a group of people around him at all times taking care of his movies, and they’re just the best of the best. They’re so good at what they do and you trust them so much that the communication is uncanny. And I’m just happy to be a part of it. I’m happy that he trusts me.”
The film is set to start filming next month and Gunn seems to be incredibly confident with his script and the pre-production process. The film will be released in theatres on July 11, 2025.
