The widely popular sorcerer series Jujutsu Kaisen‘s creator, Gege Akutami, has long been trying to maintain a strict policy of projecting themselves onto their characters. Regardless of all their efforts in maintaining this separation, Gojo has managed to surpass even his creator by unintentionally becoming a reflection of the mangaka themselves.

Gege Akutami’s Principle on Character Creation

In a Q&A session that is compiled in the Jujutsu Kaisen Official fanbook via Tumblr, Gege Akutami stated, “I always keep it in my mind to avoid projecting myself to my characters.” This has been the fundamental principle in their artistic process, which has given them diverse and unique characters in the series. Their commitment to this principle extends beyond mere creative ideology.

Akutami determinedly implied, “There’s no one. I try not to project myself to them (even in the future),” when they were asked if they had projected themselves or any character that appears later might look like them. They always keep separate their personal characteristics from the fictional creations, which has been the main reason for the series’ well-maintained characters.

Their approach has allowed the creation of varied kinds of characters that resonate with the readers on various levels, particularly the kind-hearted Yuji Itadori and the enigmatic Satoru Gojo. Each of the characters offers their individual characteristics and traits as precisely their own.

Gege Akutami’s Quirk Matches With Their Creation Satoru Gojo

Even though Akutami strictly maintained their principle, they couldn’t prevent Gojo from getting out of that strict matrix. Tatsuhiki Katayama, the editor of Jujutsu Kaisen, stated that Akutami and Gojo mostly resemble each other when he was asked about which character resembles Gege Akutami in person. In that, he describes the mangaka as “Cheery but super-duper smart,” characteristics that closely match the powerful and charismatic sorcerer.

Although Katayama described their resemblance, he also notes that Akutami reads a lot of novels and watches many movies, just like Gojo, with the same level of mental ability being shared by both the creator and the creation. The ironic part is that Akutami has shown their utmost dislike of Gojo on different occasions.

The unintended projection of Akutami on Satoru Gojo highlights the character’s strength within the narrative. Gojo’s extraordinary abilities make him go beyond the boundaries set by his creator, making him a remarkable and truly exceptional character in the fictional world.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
