The Malaysian actress and action star Michelle Yeoh rose to international fame with her Oscar-winning performance in the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once. However, the 61-year-old actress has been delivering memorable performances for decades and has been popularly known for doing her own stunts. The actress has shared that filming action sequences is quite easy for her as she has been doing it for years.
Although she has claimed that “physical fighting is relatively easy” for her, there have been incidents when things have not gone her way. And over the four decades of her filmmaking career, she has suffered multiple on-set injuries. However, Yeoh considers her Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon injury to be one of the worst accidents of her career.
One of the Worst Accidents of Michelle Yeoh’s Career
After establishing herself as an action star, Michelle Yeoh was approached by Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee to star in his 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Her work in the action-adventure movie is still considered one of her most iconic performances.
The Oscar winner shared that she was excited about the movie and immediately accepted the offer. She reportedly spent a year training and learning Mandarin for the film. While Yeoh described it as “the most memorable, most enjoyable” and “most emotional experience” of her career, it soon became the most painful as well.
During an interview with USA Today, she recalled an incident from the film set where she tore her ACL after the first action sequence. Although initially, she thought it was nothing serious and wanted to continue filming, it didn’t take her long to realize how severe the injury was.
“I thought, ‘I’m fine — I can keep going,” the Tomorrow Never Dies actress said before adding, “But I knew it was bad when I turned left and my leg kept swinging right.” She was taken to the hospital, where it was confirmed that she had torn the ACL in her knee. And Yeoh has described it as one of the “worst accidents” of her career.
Sony Pictures Working on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Series
Ang Lee’s 2000 action adventure was a commercial and critical hit and even landed several Oscar nominations at the 73rd Academy Awards. It was nominated under ten categories at the award ceremony and won four Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.
Over two decades after the release of the 2000 film, Sony Pictures is reportedly developing a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon series. The 2000 movie was based on the fourth part of Wang Dulu’s Chinese novel of the same name. And Deadline has reported that the series would adopt the rest of the Crane-Iron Series along with the fourth part.
