December 3rd has marked a new chapter in the lives of the denizens of Philadelphia, as it has officially been unveiled as Rocky Day, after Sylvester Stallone’s iconic sports franchise based on underdog boxer, Rocky Balboa.
The legendary actor made an appearance in the city in honour of the celebration, addressing the crowd with a speech about what the day represents, and why the character of Rocky Balboa endures almost 50 years after his first appearance in 1976.

Sylvester Stallone talked about what makes Rocky relatable
Stallone came prepared with a speech, one that was filled with personal thoughts and opinions, and also analogous to what Rocky has come to mean to audiences around the world. The character has become somewhat of an archetype for underdogs, becoming a template for a character that needs to be primed to overcome great odds. With regards to the character’s popularity, the actor, speaking to Fox News Digital, said:
“There are certain conundrums, issues, problems, journeys, challenges that everybody from every country, every culture has to face. And they may be somewhat different, but they usually deal with the same kind of — I just want to achieve something, I want people to be proud of me, I want to raise a family, I want to support my daughter. It’s this kind of fear — or [thinking] I’m really nobody inside. People look at me but, on the inside, I feel weak and shallow, that’s what the character was.”
Stallone’s speech figured along a similar track, talking about how the film represents the struggles we all face in life.

Speaking in the exact location where Rocky ended his iconic training, Stallone opened up about what the film, Rocky Day and the location they were at represents. The Creed actor said:
“It’s a tough fight and get ready. You’re going to win some and you’re gonna lose a lot. But the real victory is in never giving up and going the distance for yourself, and your loved ones, and standing at the top of these steps you’re reminded that all things are possible.”
