2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home was a huge event in multiple ways for the overall MCU and its fans. The movie brought forth all three live-action versions of Spider-Man seen in the 21st century, and was one of the most-hyped projects that have been released to date.
Fans will remember a range of iconic scenes featuring the likes of Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland, and Andrew Garfield. This includes one particular scene during which the likes of Holland and Garfield discover how Maguire’s character shoots web directly from his wrists, and does not need the kind of devices used by their own characters.
Albeit hilarious, there was another aspect of the conversation that proved a bit too much for the PG-13 movie. As it turns out, Garfield’s character revealed his desire to see the holes of Maguire’s Spider-Man, from which he shot web.

There is little doubt that the dialogue in itself had no place in the PG-13 movie. While No Way Home gave fans a range of iconic scenes featuring the three Parkers, the specific conversation led to a hilarious dialogue from Andrew Garfield. As the three brothers-in-web waited for their foes to arrive in the movie, both Holland and Garfield’s characters were stunned to find out that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man does not need a device to sling from building to building.
Instead, he had the ability to shoot web directly from his wrists, something he did struggle with at times in the original Sony trilogy. However, the conversation, as heard in the movie, concluded with the following dialogue from Garfield: (Slash Film)
I want to see the holes.
Garfield muttered the above quietly after finding out Maguire’s special ability, and the scene, as one would expect, was later edited out. After all, the MCU has for years stuck with PG-13 offerings which simply meant that this particular dialogue could not be a part of the final version of the film.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the mainstream MCU’s first R-rated offering
While for years the MCU showed a reluctance to produce R-rated content even for characters that arguably deserved the same, that is now set to change with the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans will argue that this is not only what the character of Wade Wilson deserves, it is also the logical next step for the future of the franchise.
While movies such as Logan and Deadpool have previously featured an R-rating, they were not part of the mainstream MCU. This has undoubtedly thoroughly curtailed the kind of narratives that could be included in some major projects in recent years, with a number of scenes being taken out during editing due to PG-13 ratings, according to SlashFilm.
Instead, fans have had to depend on extra clips from Marvel, with the No Way Home scene mentioned above also being released as part of the “More Fun Stuff” edition which was released in September 2022. Of course, while the shackles have effectively been taken away via Deadpool & Wolverine, it will be thoroughly entertaining to see exactly how the MCU decides to make use of this trend.
At the very least, fans can expect less subtlety in future movies, starting from Deadpool & Wolverine.
