Black Clover has become one of the most popular anime of the modern generation. Even though the anime went on a hiatus after episode 170, its fan following is growing at a steady pace. Yuki Tabata began its serialization in February 2015, and the manga has been continuing since. One of the aspects of the narrative is that it belongs to the Shonen genre but has an essence of Seinen in it.

The reason behind it is the mangaka being a fanatic of one of the greatest Seinen manga ever, Berserk. Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus has inspired him to create a manga like Black Clover. People who follow Black Clover regularly will know about its dark nature. Tabata even gave the protagonist a Guts-style sword in his masterpiece.

Kentaro Miura’s Berserk will always remain one of the greatest Seinen manga ever. For decades, he inspired countless mangaka with his detailed work, narrative, and character development. Yuki Tabata happens to be one of the people who was inspired by his work. The Black Clover mangaka implemented a dark side to his creation even though it is a Shonen manga. During an interview with Le Point, Tabata said, “I wanted to make a manga like Berserk.”

He further added, “Whether for its settings, its fights, or its story, this series remains an important source of inspiration for me. I wanted a manga in this spirit but in the Shonen style.” Berserk is particularly famous for its dark narratives like r*pe, sexual assaults, child massacres, bloodshed, etc. Seinen manga is mainly for people who are above thirty. So Tabata couldn’t create a Shonen manga with such scenes.

Being a massive Berserk fan, he wanted to add a few elements of Kentaro Miura’s creation. Berserk has underworld creatures, so he introduced elves and demons apart from humans. One of the demons massacred the elves and caused their leader to go berserk. Guts carries a massive sword on his back, and Yuki Tabata implements that idea by giving Asta a massive sword. He had to carefully add the elements without his editors knowing.

Asta and Yuno discovered new abilities and will be the ace in the battle against the former Wizard King. Even though the manga has resumed, the chapters are not being released weekly. So, it might take longer to wrap up Black Clover. With Yuki Tabata, the fans can expect things to take a darker turn before everything returns to normal.

Black Clover is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
