Episode 5 of X-Men ’97 saw some of the heaviest casualties in the history of the show, with the Mutant nation of Genosha being set upon by a rogue, insectoid sentinel, cause slew the likes of Madelyne Pryor, Magneto, and Gambit in just a few minutes.

The episode ends on a somber note, with Rogue cradling Gambit’s lifeless body, unable to “feel” him. This would indicate that the character is actually dead for good, but fans have been hoping that Gambit could be returned to life (or not be dead in the first place). However, Zann’s reaction to the death, which she revealed in an interview with CinemaBlend. She said:

“Well I was devastated too. I really feel that Rogue loves Remy deeply, and in this episode, we also find out how deeply… The fact that she says to Magneto, ‘Some things are deeper than skin.’ That’s so important because this is what Gambit said, and she repeats that.”

The actress referred to the fact that when it counted the most, Rogue chose Gambit over Magneto. However, it is exactly that choice that made Remy’s death so much more tragic.

The episode opened with Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit making it to Genosha, as the country prepared to celebrate its admission into the United Nations. As Magneto was asked to be the ruler of the nation, he offered Rogue to be his queen.

As everyone prepared for the Gala, Rogue revealed to Remy that she was actively considering the offer, and had some inclinations towards accepting it. This led to Remy breaking up with Rogue, and going to the Gala alone. At the Gala, Magneto and Rogue performed a very intimate dance, something that Remy took as further confirmation that  Rogue had made a choice. However, Rogue told Magneto that some things are deeper than skin, indicating that her choice was Remy.

However, before there can be any verbal communication, the Godzilla Sentinel attacks Genosha, and is taken down by Remy, but not before sacrificing his life. Gambit probably died thinking Rogue had chosen Magneto over him, even if he died minutes after the mutant rebel perished.
