Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead roles, was released in 2015 and is considered to be amongst the best action flicks of all time. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% and a box office gross of over $415 million, the film has a place in the hearts of all action lovers.
While we have heard countless incidents of co-stars being friendly with each other and walking out of the set with happy memories, such wasn’t the case in Fury Road. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were like cats and dogs on the set and the people around them had to walk on eggshells. However, Charlize Theron does wish that the two had done things differently.
Charlize Theron Didn’t Get Along with Tom Hardy
Mad Max: Fury Road starred Nicholas Hoult alongside Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Hoult, who played the character of Nux, stated that it was a “tense atmosphere at times” with the two on set. The film’s editor, J. Houston Yang, stated,
“Boy f*cking howdy, was it clear that those two people hated each other. They didn’t want to touch each other, they didn’t want to look at each other, they wouldn’t face each other if the camera wasn’t actively rolling.”
Theron herself backs these claims as she stated that she often found herself being alert at all times. She stated, “I was in survival mode; I was really scared sh*tless”
After Hardy arrived on the set, he and Theron were verbally aggressive with each other. Camera operator, Mark Goellnicht, stated that Theron felt so afraid that she was provided with protection on the set.
“He was quite aggressive. She felt really threatened, and that was the turning point, because then she said, ‘I want someone as protection.’ She then had a producer that was assigned to be with her all the time.”
Who knew the onscreen action was not the only action going on in Mad Max: Fury Road?

Charlize Theron Wishes Things Went Differently with Tom Hardy
Theron stated that while on the set the two were always either fighting or ignoring each other, she now looks back at the time with regret. She regrets that the other co-stars had to suffer because of them.
“We were either fighting or we were icing each other – I don’t know which one is worse – and they had to deal with it in the back. It was horrible! We should not have done that; we should have been better.”
Despite the brawl between the two, Hardy later had nothing but pleasant words for his co-star. He stated that Theron “laid down the finest lead character in an action movie.” We sure hope there is no bad blood between the two anymore!
