It seems that after bagging an Oscar, managing to make a name for yourself, and having a remarkable filmography to your name, there is very little that can trouble anyone. However, despite all her achievements and high-profile romances, Hollywood star Diane Keaton once admitted to “failing at” the traditional notion of settling down which involves walking down the aisle.
Having dated the likes of Woody Allen and Warren Beatty, Keaton’s most endearing romantic encounter was when she met Al Pacino during the filming of The Godfather.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Diane Keaton recounted her romance with her The Godfather co-star Al Pacino. Revealing how she was madly in love with him, she said, “I was mad for him. Charming, hilarious, a nonstop talker.”
However, even after dating for almost half a decade, the couple never tied the knot. While Keaton could not stand the wait any longer, she demanded a final answer from Pacino, asking him to choose between marrying her or ending the relationship. And Pacino chose the latter, breaking her heart.
While Keaton admitted that she always had this whimsical idea of love where she did not realize what actually it took to make a relationship work, she revealed that Pacino was even less realistic than her.
“But he was even less inclined to be realistic than me. And I was on the cusp of being very old. So that poor guy. I don’t think he was really that interested. And I don’t think a long-term happy marriage would be easy for him.”
In her second memoir Let’s Just Sat It Wasn’t Pretty, Keaton delved deeper into her life experiences and different perspectives. While the 77-year-old actress never married, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of love altogether.
When Diane Keaton revealed her honest-to-heart answer to why she never married
Many believe that it was her unsuccessful love with Pacino that led her to make the decision to never marry, however, there was something more important that influenced Keaton’s choice. When Lisa Kudrow asked Keaton about what informed her feelings to break the traditional expectation of society, the Morning Glory actress revealed that it all goes back to her mother,
“I feel like she chose family over her dreams. And she was just the best mother, but I think that she is the reason why I didn’t get married. I didn’t want to give up my independence.”
Furthermore, the actress quipped about the other reason why she never tied the knot. She said, “By the way, no one has ever asked me to marry them, either, so that might be a good answer. I should’ve started with that and called it a day.”
On the other hand, Pacino too decided to stay single for life. In 2012, the Scarface actor revealed that he thinks marriage is just a state of mind and not a contract. Owing to this philosophy, the actor never proposed to any of his girlfriends, explaining he could never get past the ‘legality’ of it. However, both Keaton and Pacino are parents to multiple kids. While Pacino is a father to 4, Keaton adopted two children Dexter and Duke.
