According to the biography of Winona Ryder written by Nigel Goodall, the actress opened up about just how nervous she was before acting in Edward Scissorhands alongside Johnny Depp. She stated that she was scared and insecure as Depp was the only person she truly wanted to impress with her talent.

“Working with Johnny turned out to be great, but I was scared and nervous about it. I mean, if there’s one person that I want to impress with my acting, it’s him. So there was a lot of insecurity for the first couple of days, but it turned out to be a motivating situation.”

Even Depp was a bit nervous about working with his then-fiancé as he recalled how scary it was at first. As time went by, though, things eventually fell into place and Depp found it extremely easy to work with Ryder.

“I was nervous. It’s like another level of exposing yourself to someone. You know you can be together but then to act together, be different people, especially someone like Edward…it was scary at first…But it was great. Besides the fact that I love her and everything, she’s a great actress, very giving and considerate. It was really easy working with her because stuff atomically happens. You don’t have to try. Stuff comes out.”

Unfortunately, the pair split before they could collaborate on another film. However, neither of them has ill feelings toward the other as they continue to speak about each other in extremely high regard.

“I can’t imagine anything better than to work with someone you love because then you’re never separated from them. You get to go to work together and go home together – it’s a real blessing.”

And it seems like Depp, too, saw the blessing in collaborating with Ryder. In an interview with Movieline, Depp stated that if he was living in a “perfect” world, he would “live happily ever after” by simply working on movies with Ryder and the director of Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton.
