He started preparing for the role and spent countless hours at the gym developing the required physique to play the role.

He did not use any enhancements or CGI to portray the physicality of the role as he was determined to attain the desired physical shape naturally. He talked about how proud he was of this achievement and how he went through hell to attain a shape that would be fitting to play the iconic role. He said, (via IMDB)

Cavill is known to be an extremely dedicated and committed actor. Hence, it is not surprising that he went into a bold transformation to portray a role that would change his life forever. Henry Cavill is reuniting with Guy Ritchie for the third time in an upcoming action film which he will star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González. Cavill had already worked with Ritchie in The Man from U.N.C.L.E and will lead Ritchie’s upcoming WW2 action film The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare which also stars González.

Talking about the project, Ritchie said that he is extremely excited to work with the three actors who are extremely talented and whom he trusts immensely. He also explained that the film will be action-packed while also being intellectually stimulating. He said, (via Deadline),

“There’s something special that happens when you collaborate with the same partners regularly: you build a shorthand and a trust that lets everybody do their best work. Gyllenhaal also recently starred in Guy Richie’s The Covenant which received positive reviews from critics and audiences. The project is like a full circle moment for Ritchie as he is bringing together actors from other films of his to one specific film.

The premise as detailed by Deadline sounds very intriguing. Fans will be ecstatic to see Cavill and Gyllenhaal’s electric chemistry when the film comes out.
