Despite the MCU seemingly turning away from them, the Eternals were a team of characters that a lot of fans, if not all, enjoyed watching on screen. While some parts of their story were not as interesting as others, the film gave audiences some of the MCU’s best fight sequences and expanded the Marvel Universe. Further, the film ended on quite the cliffhanger, one that fans are keen on seeing resolved in a sequel, so that these characters may join the larger fight in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Rumour has it that the MCU might be keen on producing an animated series starring the Eternals. It has already been revealed that Ikaris will make an appearance in Marvel Zombies, whenever the show releases. While some fans are excited about the rumored development, there are still others who would prefer a full sequel with a competent director and writing team.

There is a lot of speculation about how this animated series would come out, it is actually in development. Part of the rumor is that this series will be developed in the style of an anime, distinct from what the MCU has been doing so far with shows like What If…? However, there is a hunger for a proper sequel for the film, despite the flair an anime would bring to the narrative involving the Eternals

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has fumbled with a lot of characters in the MCU, but most of them have gotten a second chance at the box office. However, it seems that this courtesy will not be extended to The Eternals, especially now that Marvel is trying to release fewer shows and films to scale back the issues that it has with its disastrous 2023 run at the theatres.

An Eternals anime in the vein of X-Men ’97 could help rebuild the image of these characters in the MCU

One of the main criticisms of Eteranls was that it had too big a cast for a film of its size. With no less than 10 main protagonists, Eternals was not able to flesh out the conflicts and characters for each of its heroes, given that, unlike the Avengers, these characters did not have other films to build them up.

However, a ton of animated shows about a team of heroes that have actually done well, such as the X-Men ’97 series that was produced by Marvel Animation. Now that audiences are familiar with the characters on screen, an animated show that delves deeper into their mythology could be fun, if handled by the right director and writers.

Eternals as property might be headed in a similar direction as that of The Inhumans, who made one fumbled appearance in the MCU and were never to be seen again. However, given the tasteful way in which films have recognized Jack Kirby’s creations like Thor: Ragnarok and the New Gods in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Sersi and her compatriots do deserve a second chance and have the potential to make great superhero content.

Eternals can be streamed on Disney +
