HBO Max has been undergoing multiple changes and trying to adjust to things since its parent company, WarnerMedia, merged with Discovery. So all this turmoil encircling the streaming service has been a result of the same. But these difficulties being faced by HBO Max post-merger have been directly affecting its content as various television shows and films fall in danger of getting shelved.
Out of the manifold projects that are suspected to get discarded are a number of spin-off series of the Primetime Emmy Award-winning show Game of Thrones. George R. R. Martin, the renowned author of the novels from which GoT has been adapted, recently shared an update on the situation as he claimed that some spin-offs have already been shelved. At the same time though, Martin seems to be hopeful enough about fans getting to see these spin-offs at some point in the future.
George R. R. Martin’s Update on Shelved Game of Thrones Spin-offs
In light of the HBO Max shakeup, the critically acclaimed author shared some insight on the matter on his Not a Blog website. Talking about how he’s been “working on so many bloody things,” George R. R. Martin came bearing good news about the sixth novel in A Song of Ice and Fire and season 2 of House of the Dragon, both of which are positively in the works.
However, the novelist and screenwriter further remarked that while “several of the other successor shows” are being developed with HBO, they are yet to be “greenlit.” He then addressed the status of the Game of Thrones spin-off series, pointing out that “a couple” of them have already been put off. But Martin hasn’t lost all hope with regard to the future of these “shelved” spin-offs as he noted how there is ample opportunity for them to be revived.
“And several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO. Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”
The international success of Game of Thrones encouraged HBO to commission five different spin-offs towards the end of the Emilia Clarke-led show. And the Fire & Blood author has been attached to all of them. But given Martin’s latest updates about the situation, nothing can be said for certain. There is also no information at present about exactly which spin-off series has been shelved.
The Fate of Game of Thrones Spin-offs Remains Obscure
House of the Dragon is the first Game of Thrones spin-off which was released just a few months ago. The fantasy/drama series managed to garner high praise from both critics and audiences alike with its views skyrocketing in no time. So, House of the Dragon was renewed for another season in no time.
It’s relieving to know that fans would at least still be getting the second season of House of the Dragon, as Martin claimed it’s very much in the works. Whether the same can be said for other Game of Thrones spin-offs, is still somewhat of a mystery since we don’t know which series have been put aside. But one project that appears to be safe from the current HBO upheaval is Snow, the upcoming spin-off series which is set to be a sequel that is carried out post the events of Game of Thrones. Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow will be coming back for the same.
Official confirmation about the status of this spin-off at the end of HBO Max is yet to be received. As Martin said though, only “a couple” projects have been shelved and even those haven’t been entirely scrapped. But hopefully, the Jon Snow series isn’t one of them.
