Though Sophie Turner has starred in many extremely significant projects, none can compare to her work in the globally successful phenomenon that is Game of Thrones. Though the series had quite a controversial ending, there is no denying the fact that during its run, it was one of the most deeply adored series. There are many reasons for this fact that don’t have to do with its impeccable cast, including its world and character building, its unique form of storytelling, well-thought-out arcs, as well as its beautiful cinematography.
Turner plays the role of an extremely damaged and complex character who, over the course of its many seasons, is subjected to some truly heinous things. One of the most significant moments, however, has to be the time her soon-to-be-husband, King Joffery, forces her to see the dead body of her father. The actress went on to reveal that, when reading the script for this scene, she would often cry.
Sophie Turner Had To Become Sansa Stark
Sophie Turner gave an interview with Winter Is Coming before the premier of the first season of Game of Thrones. Here, the then-15-year-old actress spoke in great detail about what it was like for her to work on the massively successful series. She was specifically asked about what it was like for her to film the scene where her character, Sansa Stark, is forced to see the decapitated heads of those close to her, including her father. Something this awful would require to truly feel what your character is feeling would be very difficult for anyone to film, especially someone that young and fairly new to the industry.
“In order to prepare for a scene as shocking and upsetting as that scene, I had to really remove myself from myself (if that makes sense) and be Sansa, not Sophie Turner acting Sansa, I had to be her. By doing this, it meant that instead of Sophie seeing all these fake heads, it meant that Sansa was seeing all these real heads and so it all became a reality to me.”
Turner revealed that she understood this extremely well and knew the responsibility that fell in her hands. She explained that she knew that she could not do this scene as herself, looking at a dozen fake heads. She had to feel the way her character was feeling in every way possible, including looking at them as her dead, decapitated family members and friends, whom she loved deeply.
Sophie Turner Cried When Reading The Script
Sophie Turner then went on to tell Winter Is Coming that she committed to this outlook on her character so much that it had actual consequences for her, even when she was off-camera. the actress revealed that after putting herself in Sansa Stark’s shoes so devotedly, she started to get emotional when reading the script of the series.
“I would often cry when I read the script for the scene because it was such a heartbreaking and horrific scene that it would really get to me.”
The reason the actress had such strong reactions to this was the fact that she found this scene so deeply horrifying and tragic, that she couldn’t help but feel heartbroken for her character. This, on its own, is extremely impressive considering how talented and good the actress was at such a young age.
