One particularly memorable moment occurs in Season 6, where Sheldon ends up spanking Amy as punishment for faking an illness. The plot, however, was not originally envisioned in the way it ultimately unfolded. Parsons later discussed filming the sequence while describing it as one of the most challenging of his career.

Last-Minute Change Brought Sheldon and Amy’s Spanking Scene On-Camera

In Episode 10 of Season 6 of The Big Bang Theory, The Fish Guts Displacement, Amy fakes an illness to spend more time with Sheldon. When Sheldon discovers her deception, he remarks that his father would have spanked him for such behavior.

Eager for any form of intimacy with Sheldon, Amy convinces him that spanking her would be a fitting punishment for her lie. The episode concludes with Sheldon continuing the spanking as Amy encourages him to do it harder.

However, originally the scene was supposed to take place differently than it ended up being. The scene was initially intended to take place off-camera at the end of the episode, with the audience only hearing the sound of the spanks.

However, just before filming for the episode started, the makers decided to alter the scene to bring the whole sequence on-screen. Parsons recalled the last-minute change in an appearance on CONAN, saying,

While the final version played out well, it was a challenge for Jim Parsons, who had initially prepared for the scene according to the original plan, to adjust to the last-minute changes.

The actor shared that the last-minute change left him unprepared, as he had spent the entire week focusing on perfecting the sound effects for the spanking rather than considering how he would physically portray the sequence.

I can’t tell you how hard it was to, when you’re concentrated on making a noise all week, it’s like doing a radio play. Once the camera was on me… I realized I haven’t worked at all on what my face or the rest of my — I don’t know how to handle myself during this.

He also admitted that his lack of preparation led to an unusual amount of laughter and frustration. “I kept laughing which was kind of rare of me,” he said during the interview.

Talking about filming the scene at The Paley Center for Media, Parsons described it as one of the hardest things he had to perform. “It was, I would say, one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” he said before adding, “Because I found it tremendously amusing.”

Luckily, his co-star Mayim Bialik proved to be a true professional throughout the ordeal. Parsons expressed his admiration for her patience, noting that she remained “game” during the multiple takes for the scene.
