X-Men ’97 has been diving into a host of storylines from the comics, not refraining from going towards the more complex plot points that make an appearance in X-Men comics. Characters from the original animated series have been making a comeback in X-Men ’97. This has also allowed a slew of actors from the original series to return to their roles. However there is one actor who has returned in a completely different form, but still holds the fate of his character from X-Men ’97 in his hands.

Chris Potter originally voiced Gambit in X-Men: The Animated Series, a role that A.J. LoCascio has now taken over. However, the character met his end in Episode 5, Remember It, where the world witnessed an assault on Genosha at the hands of what seems to be Mister Sinister. However, Chris Potter’s Cable made an appearance in the episode, where he tried to warn the people against the end of Genosha, but failed to prevent the massacre.

Cable, the current character played by Chris Potter, can undo all the tragedy that has wracked mutant-kind in recent episodes of X-Men ’97. This was discussed by Potter himself at the Calgary Expo, as reported by the Twitter account Agents of Fandom :

Chris Potter’s Cable already attempted to prevent the massacre at Genosha and then appeared to help the X-Men investigate and fight Trask, who has been turned into a human sentinel. Cable still holds the key to undo the damage caused to mutant kind, being able to fight alongside his father, Cyclops, and the X-Men. Cable could be sent back through time, perhaps in a move similar to X-Men: Days of Future Past to prevent Mister Sinister and Bastion from ever putting their plans into motion, which could also prevent the upcoming problems that mutant kind is bound to face.

X-Men ’97 seems to be heading toward an all-out Mutant-Human War

As the episodes of the show premiere each week, audiences have been witnessing as the X-Men becoming more hostile to their human allies, especially in the wake of the attack on Genosha. Even more rational members of the team like Hank McCoy have been contemplating whether the X-Men were wrong to begin with to ask humanity for its tolerance, rather than following the path Magneto set the more radical mutants on.

With the coming episode kicking off the three-part finale of the show, titled Tolerance is Extinction Part 1, it might seem like the mutant populations might be heading towards some all-out war with humans, which might or might not be sanctioned by human leaders who could be helping the likes of Mister Sinister and Bastion. Cable might be the key to winning the war before it even begins, or even preventing the war altogether.
