Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise’s iconic 1986 film, was a massive success following its release in 2022. Capturing the high-flying action of the original film, while also introducing a bunch of new characters, director Joseph Kosinski filled big shoes by taking over the project from Tony Scott.

While several of Joseph Kosinski’s frequent collaborators hopped on board, one of his former colleagues unfortunately lost the opportunity. As per Kosinski, MCU star Josh Brolin was supposed to appear in the supporting role of Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, which later went to Jon Hamm. However, considering the filmmaker’s enthusiasm to work with Brolin, the actor seems to have a massive chance awaiting in Top Gun 3.
Josh Brolin was Joseph Kosinski’s Initial Choice for Cyclone
Following the grand success of Tom Cruise‘s Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski recently appeared for an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast while watching the 2022 movie along with the host. During the interview, Kosinski opened up about different aspects of the movie and the events that led up to the masterpiece.
During the discussion, after Joseph Kosinski shared some behind-the-scenes stories from the movie, the filmmaker was asked if any actor almost made it into Top Gun: Maverick. That’s when Kosinski opened up about the MCU actor Josh Brolin who was in talks to play Jon Hamm’s supporting role Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, in the film.
Absolutely. Brolin was on my mind. For me, you know, you always have to – you can’t put all your eggs in one basket – so for me it was Brolin and Hamm were the top two … Yeah, Josh would have done this role.

We did actually talk about it, but he was having a baby literally the moment we were going to start photography, so I knew it just wasn’t a possibility. Brolin and Hamm, both guys I’d be thrilled to work with again.
Expressing his admiration for Josh Brolin and his absolute desire to collaborate with the actor after their previous works in Only The Brave, Joseph Kosinski revealed how Brolin lost the role due to scheduling conflicts. Thankfully Jon Hamm was available to save the day by taking over the role.
Josh Brolin Might Appear in Tom Cruise’s Top Gun 3
Meanwhile, considering Joseph Kosinski’s confidence in Josh Brolin, and his desire to reunite with the star, his comments seemed to be a strong indication of Brolin’s possible appearance in Top Gun 3. Further, given that Tom Cruise’s threequel was confirmed to be in development at Paramount in January 2024, there seem even more chances of Brolin’s appearance in the film.
Joseph Kosinski’s comments have sparked speculation about the potential cast for Top Gun 3. While Tom Cruise and Glen Powell are confirmed to return, the majority of the cast is still unknown. Therefore, following Kosinski’s recent remarks, Josh Brolin‘s possible involvement could be an exciting addition to the franchise, given his impressive resume and versatility as an actor.
