Zoro was the Dream Role for Mackenyu

In an interview with Netflix, Mackenyu explained the impact of One Piece on his life, and how important was the role for him. He said:

“I was born in 1996, so ONE PIECE has been around my entire life… If you’re Japanese, it’s impossible not to know about it. Meeting Luffy is the biggest thing to ever happen to Zoro… though, of course, he’d never say that out loud. But for Zoro, I’d do anything.”

The Biggest Challenge for Mackenyu as Zoro

Zoro as a character was extremely complex and needed a lot of work. From Sword fighting to keeping that arrogant egoistic look, he required a lot of focus. While talking to Gamesradar, Mackenyu explained how he prepared for the fight scenes and which scene was the most important for him. He said:

“I have experience using two swords simultaneously and have done live-action shows using swords in the past, but when it comes to three, that’s a different story. The training I did for One Piece was specific for Zoro and the skills needed to be him. My jaw had on-the-job training! There is an iconic fight scene between Zoro and Mihawk. I can’t give too much away, but it was cold and wet when we filmed that scene, so it was a tough one for me!”
