Eddie Murphy Wants to Star in a Donkey Spin-Off

The 2001 DreamWorks animated feature introduced the bad-tempered but good-hearted ogre, Shrek, who makes several friends on his quest to rescue a princess. One of these friends also includes Donkey, voiced by the Oscar nominee Eddie Murphy.

He also voiced the character in three more installments of the franchise and recently made a brief appearance in Antonio BanderasPuss In Boots: The Last Wish. Followed by the success of the movie, both commercially and critically, Murphy is also eager for his comeback to the franchise.

The actor expressed his wish to return as Donkey while talking to ETalk. He shared that he would be happy to come back either in Shrek 5 or a Donkey spin-off. “I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek. I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” he said.

The Boomerang actor also suggested that the studio should have done a Donkey movie as he is “funnier than Puss in Boots.” He also stated that the studio simply needs to give him a call, and he would be ready to reprise his character anytime they wish.

Chris Meledandri on the Possibility of a Donkey Spin-Off

The 2022 movie, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is believed to have set the plot for the long-time anticipated Shrek 5 movie. And the executive producer of the franchise and the Illumination Entertainment CEO, Chris Meledandri, also discussed the possibility of future movies in the Shrek franchise.

During an interview with Variety, he confirmed that he has been working to bring back the original cast of the film. He said that although there are no deals in place so far, the studio “anticipate[s] the cast coming back.” He also reacted to Eddie Murphy’s demand to have a Donkey spin-off and talked about the possibility of making his wish come true.

When asked if he believes that Donkey could also support his own spin-off, he said, “Without question.” While there had been no confirmation about the Donkey spin-off, Meledandri’s comment has given hope to fans that they might see a Donkey stand-alone feature soon.
