An impeccable actor, Tom Hardy has displayed extraordinary performance in any role he sets his eye on. From playing the popular anti-hero Venom to the troubled villain Bane, he has gained a glorious fan following in a considerably short amount of time.
The star has been vocal about his tough life back when he suffered from serious drug and alcohol addiction. Even after becoming an actor, he continued on the path of self-destruction, until his life, relationships, and career came at risk.
Tom Hardy Called Himself a ‘Suburban Statistic’
Tom Hardy has always been vocal about his substance abuse problems. His relationship with the illicit substances began when he was just 13. And soon the problem took such a turn that he could not go on without them. He once remarked about it, saying,
“I was a shameful suburban statistic. I was told very clearly, ‘You go down that road, Tom, you won’t come back’. That message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am … lucky to be here. I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack.”
Things became even worse when the Mad Max actor was kicked out of his boarding school for stealing and was later arrested at the age of 17 for gun possession. Once he even found himself in the middle of nowhere, lying in the streets covered in blood and vomit. As his first marriage began to fall apart due to his detrimental ways, he finally checked himself into rehab and realized what a menace he had been all along.
Tom Hardy is Not How He Is Portrayed
Tom Hardy can usually be seen playing the tough guy role in nearly all of his movies. Despite being an accomplished star, well capable of portraying roles across genres, The Dark Knight Rises star has been forced to mold himself in a certain way. He once remarked,
“The trouble with Hollywood is they want you to be something, then they think you’re who they wanted you to be. I’m not a fighter. I’m a petite little bourgeois boy from London. People didn’t sit up and take any notice of me until I started putting on weight, kicking people, and being aggressive!”
Well, being an actor certainly has its pitfalls. While we admire Tom Hardy in brawny and rugged roles, we hope fans would be able to see him in roles that would be different than the ones he usually gets to play.
