While acting as a reboot of the original trilogy which came out during the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series has changed certain story elements as well. These changes, coupled together with a new interview given by the Call of Duty narrative director, should have fans excited for the future.

What did Call of Duty’s narrative director say on the series future?

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Call of Duty narrative director Brian Bloom said that the story won’t end with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. This could be a hint that there will be a sequel to the game, extending it beyond a trilogy. Speaking specifically on character arcs, Bloom said:

We think of character arcs as going one way, but they can also fall off their arc, they can go backwards, people can evolve and devolve. All these things, they offer rich, fertile ground to tell stories, and that’s not going to stop. In fact, I would say we’re just getting started.”

What do we know of the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?

The new reboot has borrowed several story and character elements from the original trilogy, albeit not chronologically. As an example, the notorious “No Russian” level, was in the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, but this time, it looks like it will be in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. The original trilogy centers on the antagonist Makarov’s starting a Third World War, which could be introduced in the new Modern Warfare III and continue in a theoretical fourth game.

We also know that, in terms of gameplay, there will largely be two kinds of missions for players to complete in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. The first will be linear and cinematic, and the second will be more open-ended allowing players to complete the objectives in an open environment with optional content. In the latter, players can even complete objectives in the order they wish to.
