Followed by his defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, Johnny Depp is set to make his on-screen comeback with the 2023 biographical drama Jeanne du Barry. The French film, however, was surrounded by controversies after the French actress Adele Haenel called out Cannes for celebrating r*pist. In her open letter to the French magazine, Telerama, she said that Cannes would do anything to defend its r*pist chiefs.

Cannes Boss on Johnny Depp Backlash

The chief of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Fremaux, questioned the claims made by the French actress Adele Haenel recently. He further denied the claims that the Cannes Film Festival celebrates r*pist. He also addressed the criticism surrounding Maiwenn‘s film Jeanne du Barry featuring Johnny Depp as French King Louis XV. He said that he’s unaware of the actor’s image in the USA, but he only follows one rule.

“To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule, it’s the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework.”

He further said that if the Dark Shadows star was “banned from acting” or the film was banned, there wouldn’t be any discussion about it. Fremaux also said that the controversy came up after the film was announced at Cannes. He also claimed that it was the director’s choice to cast Depp in the film, and he could not say anything about it.

Johnny Depp And Maiwenn Constantly Argued During Filming

Jeanne du Barry follows the story of the French King Louis XV and his last mistress Jeanne du Barry. The director of the film Maiwenn also portrayed the character of Jeanne du Barry in the film, and reports suggest that the two did not get along on the set.

Actor Bernard Montiel shared the claims during his appearance on a French talk show. He claimed that screening wars would start on the set as soon as the director cuts a scene. The actor also claimed that the Platoon actor and Maiwenn continued “screaming at each other the whole time.”
