Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is one of the most critically acclaimed pieces of Star Wars media, despite it’s divisive nature. The film might not fit well into Star Wars canon, but on its own, the film is a visual treat that is well constructed and beautifully executed.
Speaking to Empire Online, Rian Johnson revealed what was the one thing that he had to keep in mind to make sure his Star Wars film seemed like it did indeed exist, in a universe far, far away.
Rian Johnson had a tough time not incorporating modern language into The Last Jedi
Through Empire Online, Rian Johnson revealed that it was very difficult for him to not put modern idioms into the script. The Knives Out director said:
I found myself constantly wanting to push modern idioms into the dialogue, and sometimes that can work, but you have to be very careful. If you go too far you can break that Star Wars spell.
The other challenge is the tech talk, which has to be simultaneously complex enough to sound real and conceptually simple enough to follow. The original films were brilliant at that.
Given that the entire story takes place a long time ago and in a galaxy far far away, Star Wars scripts usually do not have the luxury of the kind of pop culture references that are commonplace in franchises like the MCU.
This allows the world of Star Wars to be more immersive, with its own unique language, one that lends itself to the science-fiction aesthetic of the story, and the secondary world that it is set in.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still happening
A Star Wars trilogy from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still in the works, but updates on the show have been slow. Given that Disney is scaling back on projects from all its entertainment pillars, such as Marvel and Disney Animation, it is odd that this project has not been axed, despite the lack of updates.
Rian Johnson is confident that seven years on, the trilogy is still happening, and there has been no official word from Disney on the cancellation of the project. The trilogy was set to be divorced from the Skywalker saga, back when the company was ‘gearing up’ to deviate from the Skywalker family with respect to Star Wars stories.
