As the interview with GQ continued, Isaac revealed that to act good, he needed to fall in love with the character first. However, he was allowed little creative freedom for the character of Poe Dameron.

It was hard. I actually felt the most green and insecure that I had in a long time. I was like, ‘What am I doing here?’ There was not a lot of room to shade in the character.

He further continued,

Every time I tried to do that, it would slow things down too much. J.J. would be like, ‘Get on with it, man!’ Just, ‘Louder! Faster!’ And then I would feel like I was doing that all the time.

Eventually, Oscar Isaac learned to just go with the flow. Star Wars: The Force Awakens received a rating of 7.8/10 on IMDB and a record high of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
