Miriam Margolyes Urges Adult Harry Potter Fans to Move On!

It’s not easy to move on from Harry Potter, especially when companies continuously fuel the nostalgia with spin-offs like Fantastic Beasts, the Cursed Child play, and the countless merchandise and theme parks and experiences. They’re all flawlessly designed to whisk the fans right back to their Harry Potter-obsessed selves.

However, the actress who played Professor Sprout, Miriam Margolyes, appearing in  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011, believes that adults should let go and stop obsessing over the franchise. In a recent interview with ABC News Australia, she explained why she is supposedly unhappy with the adult Harry Potter fans. She said,

“I’m not unhappy about it, I just think that it’s for children. If your balls have dropped, then it’s time to forget about it. You know, go on to other things. No, seriously! It’s a great series. It’s a wonderful set of films. I’m proud I was in it. But, it was 25 years ago. You know, grow up! “

But is it necessary to leave the wizarding world behind when entering into the real one? While the actress acknowledges the hold it had on the world over the past 25 years and she truly feels blessed to have been a part of something this grand, she still stands by her statements. In addition to that, this isn’t the first time she’s shared such sentiments regarding the matter, as she has repeatedly called out Harry Potter fans. This time was no exception as well.

Miriam Margolyes’ Earnings from the Harry Potter Movies

The original Harry Potter franchise has launched quite a few stars to stardom and made several careers, including Miriam Margolyes’. Although she was an accomplished actress before joining the franchise, with notable work in Babe, The Age of Innocence, Romeo and Juliet, as well as Mulan, the series propelled her fame beyond imagination.

Thus, a few years back she also boasted about how much she was paid for the franchise. Even though she felt it was too little at the time, the numerous doors this opportunity opened up have since made her feel nothing but grateful. She told Metro,

“I never made Harry Potter millions. I think the three or four main people did and they deserve it but my character didn’t. I was only in two and I only got £60,000 for being Professor Sprout but I’m not grumbling… Now. I grumbled then but it made me very famous.”

In addition to that, despite being such a significant part of the franchise, she doesn’t consider herself a fan. She once revealed to a fan while filming a birthday message for a fan on Cameo, (via Metro)

“I understand you and Chris are huge Harry Potter fans,Here’s the thing, I’m not. I’m not against it, I’m just not interested. I’ve never seen a film. I’ve never seen the books, I’ve never read them. I just pocket the money when it comes and I’m very grateful for it. I think that JK Rowling is a terrific writer and I’m sure Harry Potter’s world is a good world. But it’s not my world.”

Although she could have conveyed her perspective without being such a party pooper, her stance does explain a lot and shed light on her viewpoint. While she doesn’t undermine the franchise, she believes there are plenty of other concerns and interests in life that deserve people’s attention instead of fixating on Harry Potter.
