What happened between Tom Felton and Alan Rickman?

The long cloak of the Potions Master was an iconic element of both his character and the Harry Potter movies. Interestingly, this cape was highly infamous for its extraordinary and nearly fatal capabilities. It was during a scene where Tom Felton was told to walk closely to Alan Rickman.

According to Tom Felton, he was given repeated instructions by the Love Actually actor to take care and not to step on his cloak.

“I was told in no uncertain terms by Alan Rickman, ‘Don’t step on my f–king cloak.’ I sort of giggled, the Death Eaters and I looked at each other [like] ‘is he joking?'”

But it was wrong for the 35-year-old actor to take it as a joke. In the very next scene, he is the first to step on Snape’s cape. Tom Felton admitted that Alan Rickman presented a look that nobody would want to see.

“It quickly became apparent that he was definitely not joking. The next take, the director was very keen for me to walk as close as I can to Alan, and we got about halfway down the Great Hall before [mimes getting choked around the neck]. You have to bear in mind that his cloak was attached around his neck. [I] nearly killed the poor man. Then he turned around again and gave me a look that you never ever want to see.”

However, Felton was lucky as he was not the only one to pull that off. There was also another one who stepped on Rickman’s cloak and that person took away the heat from the Draco Malfoy actor.

Very luckily, the next take someone else stepped on his cloak, so that kind of took the heat away from me. But, I’ll never forget the words ‘don’t step on my f–king cloak’.”

It can’t be denied that Alan Rickman had a priceless contribution to the movies. He was absolutely splendid in his role as Severus Snape and gained worldwide acclaim. But looks like, there were some things that the actor wasn’t a fan of.

Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Severus Snape also led J.K. Rowling to praise him for pulling off such a complex character. However, the actor was not satisfied with his character arc to some extent and felt that the movies didn’t develop him very well. According to a report by The Independent, the late actor wrote in a note:

“It’s as if David Yates has decided that this is not important in the scheme of things i.e. teen audience appeal.”

Rickman also had a problem with how the death scene of Dumbledore played out in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. But despite his frustrations, he remained in the franchise and it also earned him praise from the British producer David Heyman.

Now as the whole saga is on its way to get a reboot series, it will be interesting to find out who will take over the cloak. While certainly, nobody can replace the iconic performance delivered by Rickman, it will be hoped that his successor will add his own unique charm to the role and live up to the expectations.

All the Harry Potter movies can be streamed on Max.
