As mentioned in multiple interviews, Depp, in his youth, considered The Stooges frontman Iggy Pop as one of his heroes. However, their first interaction, described by Depp as “the best moment of his life” on the Graham Norton Show, is not what most fans would expect an interaction with their idol to be.

Depp has been a musician since his early years. At 17, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory alum and his band, Kids, opened for the Stooges on two separate occasions. However, even though the bands were performing on the same stage, Depp would not get a chance to meet Pop. According to Depp:

“I want to meet him but I don’t wanna go ‘Oh man, I love your music…’, I needed something different, so I got caught in, you know, incoherently drunk, pints of vodka to work up the nerve to say something idotic.”

Depp has admired pop all his life, and even at 17, it would make sense that the actor would not want to embarrass himself in front of his idol. Iggy Pop is also known for his eccentric quirks, which also reflects on Depp and his acting choices. The actor decided that he wanted to get Iggy’s attention in a unique manner, so as to stand out from “standard” fans. However, how he went about it might be considered hilarious by some.

Depp addressed pop only after he had chugged down a significant amount of alcohol. However, how Depp to Pop’s attention was no what anyone had expected. The actor said:

“So he was walking around with the beagle, I don’t know why, after the show, the lights were on. He doesn’t know either (laughs). So I though ‘I will get him’ and I just started screaming (Drunk) ‘Iggy Flop, Piggy Slop,’ you know?”

This certainly got the Stooges frontman’s attention, who walked over to Depp with his beagle and stared the actor down. No doubt, Depp must have felt a flurry of emotions at the moment. His hero was standing in front of him, and he had managed to annoy him a lot. The I wanna be your Dog singer replied to this by simply saying “You little t*rd” before walking away.

While Pop and Depp are great friends now, it seems ridiculous that one of their first meetings was something this bizarre and out of place. However, it fits the image that the two stars have cultivated for themselves perfectly.
