Mike Flanagan has had years of horror experience that has prepared him for his upcoming, The Exorcist movie. The film is set to follow a story that exists in the same universe; however, it showcases an entirely new set of characters, giving an almost fresh start to the franchise. With the many years of iconic projects he has had, including Oculus, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Midnight Club, audiences are aware that he is well-equipped for the challenge.
However, he revealed his feelings on the matter, and they do not seem to be the hopeful kind. While this may concern a few fans, his hesitation may be a good sign.
Mike Flanagan Is Scared
Mike Flanagan recently made an appearance at the ATX festival (via /Films), where he went into great detail about his upcoming film in The Exorcist franchise. Ever since it was announced that he would be heading the project, fans have been in a choke hold; trying to get any piece of information about it. On top of revealing his vision for the story, Flanagan mentioned his feelings about getting the opportunity to make the film.

Interestingly enough, Flanagan revealed that he was terrified of what was to come. This is quite surprising considering how he has made a name for himself as a genius when it comes to the genre. He has had many successful works and established himself as a modern-day king of horror. While many may be concerned by the statement, his fear may be a very positive thing.
The Fear Could Be a Good Indication
Confidence can often bleed into overconfidence if left unchecked. Many of the greatest figures throughout history have fallen on their faces because of this and know exactly what caused their downfall.
The same has been mirrored in Hollywood, with directors and creators having far too much faith in their capabilities, only to completely ruin something beautiful. A layer of fear is required to keep creativity in check, and the fact that Mike Flanagan has it is a very positive sign.
On top of voicing his true feelings about the matter, he is also not afraid to admit that he is afraid. His fear about taking on The Exorcist film shows that he understands the responsibility in his hands. Rather than shying away from it, however, he is facing it head-on and wants to prove his worth instead of assuming that the fans will protect him.
Such feelings showcase that the semi-reboot may be in excellent hands.
