John Cena may have taken his catchphrase “You can’t see me” quite literally while taking the stage at the 2024 Oscars, as he decided to walk out naked to present the Best Costume Award. However, the actor has now come clean about his lifelong deception while promoting his new film, Ricky Stanicky. The WWE star confessed in a recent interview, asserting that he has been living a lie and people can actually see him.
John Cena’s Candid Confession About Living a Lie
In a recent interview with MTV, the Ricky Stanicky stars John Cena and Zac Efron were asked if they have ever lied during an interview. And the wrestler turned actor took the opportunity to make a stark confession, as he replied, “All the time.” Cena continued,
“I don’t think there’s an ounce of truth in anything I’ve said. Ever. I’m living in a lie. I’m living a whole lie. I think I’m visible. I think people can see me. They can.”
The Peacemaker star seemed to be taking a quip at his catchphrase, “You can’t see me,” which has transcended the wrestling ring as his tagline and as a meme on the internet. The actor apparently uses it to taunt his opponents, suggesting that his moves are too fast for his opponents to see coming.
Cena is starring alongside Zac Efron in the comedy film Ricky Stanicky. The film follows three childhood friends who maintain an imaginary friend, Ricky Stanicky, as an excuse for their antics. They even went on to hire an actor to portray the imaginary friend when confronted about him. However, the chaos ensues when the actor takes the role too seriously.
John Cena Explained the Origin of “You Can’t See Me”
The WWE star’s catchphrase has exploded on the internet as a meme. And fans have also not missed out on the opportunity to take a dig at The Suicide Squad star via memes suggesting that they actually can’t see the actor.
As for where it came from, he shared its origin story during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Cena explained that it was the result of a dare from his younger brother, who challenged him to do the moves on TV while working on Cena’s album.
He explained that while working on his album, the actor would test his songs with his brother. Although he did not like most of his songs, he was quite impressed with The Time is Now and started doing some moves.
“[He] just did this dance that Tony Yayo did in [one] of the G-Unit videos. It was like he put his hand over his head and just kind of, like, bobbed his head like that,” Cena explained. The Freelance star, who initially found it “ridiculous” told his brother that he would do it on TV, prompting his brother to challenge him to do the same.
He shared that decided to make some changes and did the motion with his hands in front of his face, suggesting to his opponent, “Well, you’re not even on my level.” He also addressed how it has evolved in the meme culture, as he said that he has “literally” become invisible.
