Dave Filoni has already delivered a slew of bangers in the Star Wars universe, both in animated and live-action forms. After years of suffering under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, fans of the IP have been vocal about wanting Dave Filoni at the head of the table when it came to making decisions for Star Wars.

Given what the creative was able to do with the materials that he was given, Filoni is set to direct his live-action feature with recent fan favorites Din Djarin and Grogu, Dave Filoni could be positioned to take on more responsibility over at Lucasfilm, but only if his film is successful, of course.

Speaking with IGN, Dave Filoni revealed that he is very excited to take on a film project for Star Wars, as the story that he and Jon Favreau were trying to tell had expanded beyond the scope of a mere streaming show. He said:

I think the story just escalated to the point where John and I were talking about it and we’ve had a plan for a while. And I think that I’ve learned so much and it’s something that I’m very eager to try. I’ve really enjoyed working in live action and teaming up with Jon and Kathy. It’s such a great place to hone your skills.

And it just seems like the next logical step. The story also I think has, like I said, grown to a point that we want to expand a bit and do a little bit of a bigger thing than we’ve been doing on our streaming shows.

And it just presents a different structure than episodic series, making a film. So I’m looking forward to the challenge of it while still being partnered with this guy. So it’s going to be hopefully the same brand of excitement that people are used to from what we’ve been making.

The idea is to have Filoni direct the film based on the hit streaming show, with a focus on wrapping up the story of Grogu and Din Djarin (for now). If this film is able to revitalize Star Wars on the big screen, Filoni might find a much larger project on his hands.

With multiple films set in the universe already in the works with directors like Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi, it remains to be seen if Star Wars will be able to recapture the attention of the audience in theatres after the disappointment that was The Sequel Trilogy and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Star Wars as an IP has long promised fans that the show will look towards creating stories that are not connected to the Skywalker saga. Before The Acolyte, the franchise found itself firmly embroiled in the consequences of the actions of Anakin and Luke Skywalker.

Despite introducing new characters like Din Djarin, Cara Dune, and Din Gogu, the stories that the Star Wars universe has been telling have been stuck working with the Skywalkers for quite some time.

The franchise could benefit from moving ahead from the Skywalkers, perhaps taking a leap ahead in time for a few hundred or even a thousand years. The IP can tell new stories that do not have to deal with the baggage of the Skywalkers and all the stories that surround them.

Not only will this allow the universe to feel a little fresh and introduce new characters, but it will also allow the Skywalkers to rest easy in the Star Wars universe, as a completely different set of characters takes the torch ahead, leading the franchise into a new Era.
