Tom Hanks Shared His Uncertainty For His Oscar-Winning Role In Forrest Gump

Tom Hanks received his first Oscar for Best Actor in 1994 for his role in the critically acclaimed film Philadelphia. The Cast Away star followed it up with another win in 1995 for his iconic performance in Forrest Gump. Despite his achievements, Hanks expressed doubt about the impact of his role in Forrest Gump, particularly the famous bench scene. The superstar shared that he was worried about whether the people would connect to the particular scene or not.

“I will tell you, in Forrest Gump, all the stuff that we shot on the park bench in Savannah, Georgia, we were just shooting fodder for a possible narrative piece of it. And I said to Bob [Zemeckis], ‘Is anyone going to care about this nut sitting on a [bench]? What is this? No one knows what’s in this [box]’.”

Tom Hanks On Returning His Oscars For Repair

The Captain Phillips star shared that his Oscars got corroded with sweat. Hanks added that the sweat of the body when holding the award started corroding the gold of the Oscars. Thus, the superstar decided to return his award to get them repaired. However, to his disappointment, Tom Hanks got a reply from the association suggesting the superstar replace his Oscars with new ones as the damage of previous ones was beyond repair. The Big star marked that he won’t ever hold or let anyone hold his Oscars to prevent any such mishappening in the future.

“My Oscars are a little old. When you get one, the sweat in your hands have a certain level of acidity or some alkaline so when you grab them…that sweat and the chemicals in your body begin to immediately corrode the gold. I got the word back…they said they were in such bad shape, they would be happy to just give me replacements. They got serial numbers on them..so they’re going to try and replate them, and I’m never gonna touch these things again, I won’t put my hands on them or let anybody else, ‘cause everybody comes to my house and goes, ‘Can I hold your Oscar?’ ‘No, no, no, don’t hold my Oscars’.”
