Sir Ian McKellen is a significant name to the fans of pop culture after his praiseworthy performances in X-Men and The Lord of the Rings. The 84-year-old actor left his mark in other films outside of these popular franchises as well. Recently, McKellen raised a buzz on the internet after he shared a cryptic update on his career and revealed that he doesn’t think he will work for much longer.

While the fans were very concerned about his statement, it must be noted that it was not related to Ian McKellen taking any retirement. In another interview that was taken sometime earlier, the Magneto fame clarified that he wouldn’t retire from acting until and unless he is restricted by the forces of aging and mortality.

Will Sir Ian McKellen leave acting soon?

Before making himself synonymous with Gandalf the Grey, Sir Ian McKellen made himself a huge name among Marvel fans when he appeared as Magneto in 2000’s X-Men. Further, he was also seen in several movies in both franchises along with some other notable movies like Gods and Monsters, Richard III, and The Da Vinci Code.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, the actor took the internet by storm when he revealed that he is aware of his age and isn’t a fool to think that he can work for much longer.

“I don’t think…I won’t be acting for much longer. I’m not looking to be in a musical any longer or do a world tour or something any longer. I quite like living at home in my own bed within striking distance of the theatre.”

This statement concerned both the avid followers of his work and the lovers of cinema, as most people thought it was a hint of his retirement. However, another interview by Variety that was taken before the latest conversation clarified that Ian McKellen will continue his work as long as his knees and memory let him do so.

“Retire to do what? I’ve never been out of work, but I’m aware that any minute now something could happen to me which could prevent me from ever working again. But while the knees hold up and the memory remains intact, why shouldn’t I carry on? I really feel I’m quite good at this acting thing now.”

It is undoubtedly sad how we have come a long way. But still, the fans can be assured that our Magneto is still on the big screen and theatre. It will be hoped that we can spot him for a bit longer as people like him have a huge contribution to pop culture.

In an interview with Variety, he revealed that other prominent names such as Sean Connery were raised at first before he was approached for the role.

“I certainly wasn’t the first choice for Gandalf. Tony Hopkins turned it down. Sean Connery certainly did. They’re all coming out of the woodwork now, and I hope they feel silly.”

The Apt Pupil actor was also seen in the latest period thriller titled The Critic which is set around the tale of an actress in 1934’s London. He is also one of the stars who is highly anticipated to make a special appearance in Deadpool 3 as Magneto. The reports of many former X-Men actors attached to the upcoming flick raise hopes about his one last appearance in the Marvel role.
