Emma Watson Doubted Herself As An Actor After Working On Harry Potter

Emma Watson revealed that after working on the Harry Potter franchise for so long, she did not believe herself in playing any character, unlike Hermione. She credited this to the fact that she played someone, whose personality is very similar to her own, and for so long, that she thought she would not be able to act as another character.

“I didn’t know if I believed in myself yet as an actress, outside the role of Hermione, which I knew I could do, and I did for a long time. I didn’t know if I had other people in me or not,” Watson once said, “I did doubt myself a little bit. I think I’d just played one person, who in many ways was similar to my own personality, and I played her for ten years and I got so comfortable doing that, that the idea of coming out and playing somebody else was terrifying.”

She then went on to say that this doubt made her not act for a while until she took up The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which helped her establish herself outside of the billion-dollar franchise. This, however, wasn’t the only thing that came with Watson and affected her career after doing the wizard franchise.

Emma Watson Will Not Go Nude To Avoid Being Hermione Again

Emma Watson has also revealed that she has had to be very particular about what types of roles she picks as she does not want to be typecast as Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. She added that one of the things that she avoids when looking for work is period pieces, fearing that getting into a corset would be just like playing the Harry Potter character again. This however changed as she has been part of Beauty and the Beast and Little Women, which are both set in much other times.

“I’m not going to get my kit off or snort cocaine in a film, just to leave Hermione behind,” Watson said, “I’m not going to do something shocking because I’m so paranoid or insecure that I can’t play another role convincingly. I don’t want everyone to forget me as Hermione. I’m really proud of her.”

She then went on to say that regardless of these, she would not do extreme things like going nude for a role or doing drugs, just for the sake of leaving this particular character behind. She added that she is not trying to forget her work in the massively successful franchise and is, in fact, very proud of it.
