The 44-year-old Scottish actor, James McAvoy is known for his roles in Shameless and Becoming Jane, and currently, he is one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood. However, X-Men fans know him by the name of Professor X a.k.a Charles Xavier for his famous role in four different X-Men movies.
After featuring as Professor X in multiple X-Men movies, he wasn’t seen either in Logan or in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness. The role was passed onto Patrick Stewart, who reprised his role as old Professor X. Patrick Stewart played the role of Charles Xavier multiple times in different X-Men movies before it was passed on to James McAvoy to show the character development throughout the films.
Will James McAvoy Reprise His Role As Professor X In The X-Men Series
James McAvoy is currently working on his latest film, Speak No Evil, an American psychological horror thriller, which is set to release in 2024. However, in an interview that took place back in 2021 with the ComicBook, he was asked about his take on reprising the role of Professor X for the X-Men movies, to which he said.
“I’m all about doing good stuff, and when I got asked to play Charles the first time, it was good stuff. It was good writing, and I was excited. If people offer me good writing, I’m always going to be excited, but I do feel like I’ve had a good ending with Charles and I got to explore some really good stuff, particularly in the first two movies that I did for him as a character. So if my time is done, I’m happy with the time that I spent and the time that I was given and if good writing comes in and people want to do stuff with me, I’ll always be open to that, but it’s got to be good.”
The 44-year-old X-Men star even went on to praise Marvel’s chief creator officer, Kevin Feige, and said that he isn’t against working with the MCU creative team either, further implying that.
“They’re clever people … they’re so good at putting their stuff together. They’ll figure out where to do it, but that might not involve people who’ve done it before. It might be a complete reimagining. And as a fan, I’m down for that as well and I’d be excited to see what happens next. If what happens next involves us, then that could be cool, but I’m not sure what way they’re going to go with it, basically. But as a fan, I’m excited to see whatever way they go.”
However, the fans of X-Men have always been optimistic about getting to see a younger version of Professor X, but the MCU has different plans. Right now, it isn’t confirmed but certainly, there is a possibility as Marvel is getting into multiverse madness.
Why Sir Patrick Stewart Was Not Sure About Reprising The Role of James McAvoy’s Professor X
Sir Patrick Stewart was recently seen reprising his role in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness as the old Charles Xavier. The 83-year-old English actor previously played the role of Professor X in Logan and played the role of Charles Xavier multiple times across various films.
Over the course of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, he has been killed half of the time on screen, but those deaths don’t last long. However, when asked in an Interview with Variety about being unsure while reprising his role he said.
“Well, it was a day-and-a-half’s work. I was in a very different environment from the one that I had ever been in, in any of the X-Men movies. And just like Picard, I was grateful for it, because I could think refreshingly about who he was and how he related to others. Just like Star Trek: Picard, I was a little unsure at first if it was a wise thing to do. Given that Logan had been such a powerful movie and we watched him die in Hugh Jackman’s arms. So having seen [Doctor Strange 2] on Monday night, I’m very happy and very proud that I’ve been part of that.”
Currently, the way X-Men movies are moving along it is very unlikely that the 44-year-old Scottish actor will get a chance to reprise his role as Professor X. But there is no doubt that Patrick Stewart loved reprising his role and looking forward to acting in more X-Men movies.
